A custom bamboo flute design of mine, inspired by the bamboo flute that David Carradine plays in scenes from Kill Bill. The flute featured in Kill Bill is a David Carradine custom flute design.

David is a unique flute builder! He grows his own bamboo, harvests it, and designs beautiful bamboo flutes for himself. He tends to set the emboucher several nodes down the bamboo towards the center depending on what kind of bamboo he is making his flute out of. The flute he designed for the Silent Flute film is a great example of his creative flute building perspective.

I've researched the bamboo flute that is played in the Kill Bill film, and watched the scene in the film multiple times and came up with this design based on the research I have done. I got a good look at David's flute from Bruce Lee's "The Silent Flute" in David's Tai Chi DVD under the film extras menu on the DVD.

The emboucher, the breath hole on the Kill Bill Flute begins at the second or third node (cell) of the bamboo. On this replica the emboucher is located after the second node of the bamboo. The flute in the film is said to be 36-37 inches in length. This replica is 37 inches in length and has 4 or 5 tone holes and is tuned to either oriental major or minor scales. Comfortable stretch, for ease of performance. Made from green bamboo.

The size of the flute is inspired by the flutes of the ancient Shaolin masters who used their instruments as walking sticks, martial arts practice tools and if need be as weapons.

THIS BAMBOO FLUTE FEATURES AN EXTRA OPEN CHAMBER TO IMPROVE TONAL QUALITIES ESPECIALLY APPARENT WHEN THE CHAMBER IS MIKED UP IN THE STUDIO. THIS PART EXTENDS PAST THE CHIN TO THE LEFT SHOULDER AND CAN BE USED AS A REST THE WAY VIOLINS ARE RESTED ON THE LEFT SHOULDER. THIS IS THE STYLE OF FLUTE THAT DAVID CARRADINE PLAYS IN KILL BILL AND IN BRUCE LEE’S “THE SILENT FLUTE”.

All my flutes are tuned in A440 concert pitch. You could use this flute for performing, studio recording work, personal meditation practice, inner journeying.

I have customized the look of this flute with light finishing and sealing methods, eco-flow water based stain, bee's wax, brush strokes, and custom binding. The bore (inside of the flute) is finished and sealed. Head out into special nature spots near streams and rivers to play.
